In about 1968,ATSF donated Verde Valley on the day it came out of revenue service to the Gulf Coast Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society in Houston, TX. Over the next few years, the car was restored there. The Verde Valley was kept in serviceable condition and used on excursions; on more than one occasion it was lived on in live storage at Marde Gras. It also ventured to San Antonio, TX, and to Lafayette, LA
